OK, I’ve been doing a lot of homework in preparation for my controller upgrade. I think I’m ready to take the plunge. I’ve scoured this board for info, and felt it’d be wise to start a new thread.
For some history, it’s an ’83 Wells Index, Sharnoa Tiger 3 controller. I am trying to get information on my DC Servo Motors. The tag reads : PM Field DC Servo Motor, Waltham, Mass, SN 108118, MT5330-008 DF. Trying to locate specs on the drives. I will be trying to reuse them as they were working fine before the controller went south.
I have downloaded the software for Mach2 and played with it a little, following the manual, which I’ve downloaded and printed, too. So far, I absolutely love it.
I have all the phone numbers and web addresses of all concerned, but thought I’d ask here first as a few of you have been in my shoes. I find the yahoo board terribly cumbersome and some of my posts have been lost to cyber space. I haven’t found a way to search it yet, either.
First off, if the break out board. The manual talks about them, but doesn’t give a suggestion or preference for one. Do you all have a preference? If so, please advise with websites, or personal contacts (or sell me one of yours).
Secondly is the Gecko drives. I’ve been to their site and it looks like I need the 320 or 340. Does that depend primarily on what servos I have? I’m not sure exactly what my specs are yet, still trying to locate info. I have their phone number and will call if I don’t get the answers here.
Lastly, the manual talks about EMO buttons (physical ones as opposed to the virtual one in the software). How have you all gone about mounting them? On the same note, is the keyboard as cumbersome to use as it looks? <feels> After running “regular” controllers for 15 years, it’s just weird to be using a mouse to select what I want to do and using arrow keys to make the moves. Have you all made separate boxes for your jog buttons, cycle start, EMO, etc?
I’ve read about people making MPG’s out of encoders and that looks inviting. Also read about using the mouse wheel as an MPG.
So, that’s it for now, there will be plenty more to come. Thanks in advance.

I have downloaded the software for Mach2 and played with it a little, following the manual, which I’ve downloaded and printed, too. So far, I absolutely love it.I would say that Mach3 would be a better starting point as it has better support for things like MPG etc and is more user friendly IMO.First off, if the break out board. The manual talks about them, but doesn’t give a suggestion or preference for one. Do you all have a preference? If so, please advise with websites, or personal contacts (or sell me one of yours).Really depends on what you need I have a PMDX 122 and love it, gets its power from the USB so no seperate power supply needed but it is limited to 1 relay so if you are needing to control a lot of things like flood, mist, spindle etc then possibly its not the one for you. Bob Campbell/Jim Cullins do nice breakouts and also there are extremely cheap one at CNC4PC of which I have heard good reports.Secondly is the Gecko drives. I’ve been to their site and it looks like I need the 320 or 340. Does that depend primarily on what servos I have? I’m not sure exactly what my specs are yet, still trying to locate info. I have their phone number and will call if I don’t get the answers here.Sorry cant really help here as I have steppers but talk to Mariss and he will talk you through what suits you best may even be able to help you find out about your servos.Lastly, the manual talks about EMO buttons (physical ones as opposed to the virtual one in the software). How have you all gone about mounting them? On the same note, is the keyboard as cumbersome to use as it looks? <feels> After running “regular” controllers for 15 years, it’s just weird to be using a mouse to select what I want to do and using arrow keys to make the moves. Have you all made separate boxes for your jog buttons, cycle start, EMO, etc?The keyboard and mouse are OK but not great IMO, I have a panel made up with buttons and MPG ( Use Ipac to interface the buttons) and hardly touch the keyboard/mouse now but on my next build I have a touch screen, still have a panel in case the screen doesnt work out as good as I think it will, time will tellI’ve read about people making MPG’s out of encoders and that looks inviting. Also read about using the mouse wheel as an MPG.Mouse is no use really for MPG AFAIK you can only really use it as a Jog for a single axis, but maybe I am wrong. Encloders are OK and should work well but I think nothing beats the looks and feel of an MPG made for the task. I have a Nemicon that I got through the Bulk buy on Yahoo group but think www.RogersMachine.net do them and also he has a closed loop interface for use with Mach which looks interesting.

Chevy,
Good reply by Hood above, covers most things.
I'd like to adddress your Yahoo group problem.
Take a look at a program called PG Offline
http://www.personalgroupware.com/
This allows you to download all the yahho mail direct onto your hard drive and save it there.
All messages are available from your drive, if any get deleted later you stil have them. Searceable by name subject and keyword.
I have the mach3 list from post 1 to the latest at 48843 and it's savable and can be transfered to another machine.
I read about 12 yahoo groups, I open PG Offline and it automatically updates all the groups, takes about 1 to 2 minutes then I can read the posts at my own pace even if I'm not connected to the net.
I find it a boon and would be lost without it.
Usual no connection except as a very satisfied user and they do a 30 day no restriction demo.

Thank you very much for your time Mr. Hood. I'm printing it out to re-read a few times and putting it in the newly formed file for this project.
The keyboard and mouse are OK but not great IMO, I have a panel made up with buttons and MPG ( Use Ipac to interface the buttons) and hardly touch the keyboard/mouse nowI agree that the look and feel of a 'real' MPG can't be beat. If it's not too much trouble, would you mind taking a couple pictures for me? Just to get an idea. Don't go way out of your way.( Use Ipac to interface the buttons)What exactly is Ipac?
Many thanks again!

An ipac is a keyboard emulator, when you press a button it emulates the keystroke you have programmed in and will carry out that function in Mach. as an example if you press Alt R on your keyboard it is the equivelent to pressing the Start button in Mach, you can then use this to set up a button with ipac and keygrabber program and you now have a 'real' Start button. You will find iPac HERE.
I have a small button panel on my first conversion and a slightly better one on my new project, will post pics in a bit.

Heres the panels, first the one on my manual Bridgeport conversion and next the one on my BOSS conversion. Neither are pretty but they are functional the one on the BOSS has been engraved with the functions using a 1mm endmill. I dont need so many buttons on the BOSS one as I will have a touch screen and it will probably be hardly used but is there in case the touch screen doesnt live up to my hopes and dreams

Very slick Mr. Hood! Thank you! I think they're pretty as all get out. Where did you learn to wire them? Will I be able to get that info from the Ipac site? Thank you for posting that, too.

Wiring is simple, run a ground from the I-Pac round to each switch then connect the other terminal of each switch to the terminals on the i-pac. Then use keygrabber (comes in Mach folder) to choose which geys do what.

Ahha!
Thats what I-pac does....very cool.
I don't have the time to keep up with all this
gadgetry on the yahoo site.
I can't wait to implement MACH on my machines!
Thanks for the pics....

John,
I downloaded the PG Offline software. Upon start up and entering my Master Login, I get a standard mail looking window that's completely blank with the following error message in the bottom pane:
1/30/2006 6:53:37 AM > Get group's list
1/30/2006 6:53:39 AM > Error : Invalid page format.
Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!
Hood, the I-pac is very slick looking, adding that to the purchase list. Where did you find your MPG wheel? Was that something you had lying around? Don't have many machine suppliers around here. And my original controller doesn't have one Thank you!
On a side note: I'm hoping to be in/near London (Dorking) in 2007. Looks like I'm going to have to plan a trip up north (and way up north) Would love to meet you guys and see your stuff.

Chevy, one word about the i-pac, don’t get the USB version. I am not 100% sure on this but it sticks in my mind that the USB one doesnt work great with Mach, so probably best to get the PS2 version to avoid any problems.
I got my MPG from the Mach Yahoo group, a guy by the name of Peter Renolds was doing a bulk buy and loads of Yahoo Mach members got them, you should be able to contact him through his company http://www.zoomt.com as I know he did do a second bulk buy and may still have some left. Your other option that I know of is Ron Rogers of http://www.rogersmachine.net/MPG/heatsink.html Not tried them but they look good and also the closed loop interface he sells is very interesting and might be on my purchase list when I get a bit of cash together again.

No problems Chevy and yes if you are in the UK in 2007 you are more than welcome to look over the Bridgeport, might even have it finished by then LOL

Chevy,
It will also pay to have a look at the MODIO board sold by Peter Homann http://www.homanndesigns.com/
This is ideal to connect the MPG up to and also get extra I/O ports for tool changers spindle speed control etc.
If you do get to the UK I'm on the way up to Hood's and also only about 5 miles from John Prentice the Mach3 docs guru.
As regards the PG Offline there is a support group at http://www.personalgroupware.com/support.htm but first of all try File > Options> then uncheck everything in the Mail tag box.

Your suggestion didn't work, so I played around a little.. turned out was missing the group name under file> options> group. downloading some million and a half messages now plenty there to read.
Thank you both for the additional tips. Will be purchasing stuff soon.

Mark, Once you have all the posts downloaded go to File > Export to Folder and save them.
You can then use this datbase later if you move machines, loose anything etc.
It saves having to start from scratch again.
I tend to back up the seperate groups about every two weeks.
You can also save onto a CD for added safety.
If anything goes pear shaped then I only have two weeks to catch up.

Thanks again John.
Got that working fine now and will be registering for it shortly. I like it. One thing I can't find though, is how to start a new thread? I found 'reply' no problem.
May as well ask this here until I figure out how to make a new post there:
I downloaded Mach2, played with it, like it very much. Then downloaded Mach3 as was suggested. When I bring up Mach3, the 'reset' button doesn't do anything. 'LEDs' keep blinking green/red. Do I need to delete Mach2 entirely and reinstall Mach3? Think it may be causing a conflict? I like the layout of 3 better.
If you run into John Prentice, shake his hand for me Outstanding job on the docs.
Hood, I've made contact with Peter and will be buying his last available MPG.
Thanks again!

Mark,
To start a new post right click in an empty part of the message screen and select Reply to Group then add your subject line.
As for the reset button not got Mach on this machine but from memoery go to Setup > Posts and Pins and enable / disable the E stop pin.
It's looking for the Estop connection which you can't give it as you are not connected to anything.
If it's low swap to high and try that.
Mach3 is better. It supports the MPG's better than Mach2 and there are some new features in 3 that won't run in 2.
John Prentice is doing a lot of behind the scenes work.
Her's a link to a small part of what he's doing.
http://www.machsupport.com/MachCusto..n_case_studies
This is using the ModIO to replace the Ipac and keygrabber.
